The Green Party Renews Call For The Government To Offer Safe Passage To Refugees As Fears Grow Over Russia Expanding Operations Beyond Ukraine. By Adam Colclough

The Green Party has renewed its call for the government to accept more refugees from the conflict in Ukraine and to open safe routes for refugees currently in Moldova to resettle in the UK.

Michal Chantkowski, an activist for the party said, “We stand in solidarity with the people of Moldova, and we commend their generosity and selflessness in the face of the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in neighbouring Ukraine,” and that it was time for the UK government to “offer safe passage to many more Ukrainian refugees. This must also include citizens of countries other than Ukraine who are fleeing from Putin’s illegal war”.

In one of his daily video addresses Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that the invasion of his country may be only the first stage in Russian plans to invade other countries in the region.

In the video, as reported by the Guardian, he says “All the nations that, like us, believe in the victory of life over death must fight with us. They must help us, because we are the first in line. And who will come next?”.

The Russian government has made no official comment on the next stage of its ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine. Unexplained explosions in Transnistria, a breakaway Russian controlled territory in Moldova bordering Ukraine have raised fears the conflict may be spreading.

Michal Chantkowski said that “Moldova is a country with only limited means to support people fleeing war, so we also call for financial and material help to be provided to public and civil society organisations in Moldova who are bearing the brunt of providing emergency support to the refugees.”

He went on to say “We strongly support the territorial integrity of Moldova and the country’s right to self-determination, including the right to apply to join the European Union. We call on the UK government to restate its support for Moldova’s independence and to provide support for democratic civil society organisations within the country.”
