A General Election is needed to end the chaos of a government that can no longer do its job says Green co-leader. By Adam Colclough

Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsey has called for a general election to end the ‘chaos’ into which the Truss government has descended.

Yesterday in a statement to the House of Commons newly appointed chancellor Jeremy Hunt dismantled most of the measures announced last month as part of a ‘mini-budget’ delivered by predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng.

These include a planned tax cuts and the guarantee on energy prices, which will now only remain in place until next Spring when it will be replaced with measures targeted towards those most in need.

The institute for Fiscal Studies said the £32bn increases due to the policy reversals made by the chancellor, would not on their own be enough to undo the “debacle” caused by the mini-budget.

The chancellor will make another fiscal statement on 31st October in which cuts of between £60bn and £72bn to public spending could be announced.

Adrian Ramsey said the chancellor’s emergency statement was a symbol of the “economic and political instability” caused by “recklessness” on the part of a government “with no regard for the needs of ordinary people or the environment”.

It would, he said, lead to a return to the austerity policies of the 2010’s resulting in “more cuts to vital public services and more suffering by everyday people who did not vote for and do not want the dangerous ideologically-driven policies the Conservatives brought forward and are now desperately scrambling to overturn”.

The plan to cap unit costs for household energy that could potentially limit average bills to £2,500, will be reviewed in April next year, and will be replaced by something less costly and more targeted.

Concern has been expressed that the change in policy could see 8.2million UK households plunged into fuel poverty.

National Energy Action chief executive Adam Scorer said many people were facing the “bleakest of Winters”, one where they will be “forced into impossible situations – choosing between heating and eating, forced into spiralling debt, and putting their emotional and physical health at significant risk”.

Adrian Ramsey said the chancellor’s emergency statement had ‘ripped up’ what remained of prime minister Liz Truss’s credibility.

He went on to say “The government can no longer govern - this chaos has to end. We cannot continue to lurch from crisis to crisis, while people are left struggling to get by and the natural world around us is destroyed.”

Adding that “We need a general election now so people can vote for the policies they want to see to turn this mess around”.
